Non-battle injuries due to infectious diseases account for most illnesses encountered by military personnel in combat operations. Add to this, infections occurring during training, in post-battle injuries, humanitarian relief, regular deployments overseas, and capacity-building activities in endemic areas, infectious diseases stand as the largest threat to the health and readiness of military personnel and the success of military operations worldwide.
To support the DOD’s strategic initiatives to mitigate the threat of emerging infectious diseases to the U.S. military through research and surveillance, our team of scientists and medical professionals work side by side with military researchers at home and abroad to provide surveillance, detect outbreaks, and design and develop rapid point-of-care, field-ready infectious disease identification devices for warfighter protection. Our infectious diseases researchers are exploring advancements in personal protective systems, developing and testing vaccines for enteric, respiratory, and vector-borne diseases, and testing new innate immunity therapeutics to promote healing for warfighters with antimicrobial-resistant infections. Our team is committed to providing cutting-edge research to assist the U.S. military in staying in the fight and protecting the health and readiness of military members and their families.
The U.S. Military has been concerned about the impact that infectious diseases can have on readiness and Force effectiveness for over 100 years. Because the DOD often deploys personnel to countries where infectious diseases are endemic, the military has a unique interest in surveillance, detection, epidemiological studies, and research . . .
CAMRIS is a recognized expert in Global Health and Emerging Infectious Diseases. Our experts work alongside our military and government partners, at home and abroad, to enhance outbreak preparedness and plan for rapid response activities.
Our research staff focuses their expertise on finding new technological approaches, pre-clinical advanced non-human models, and new vaccines and biologics for military-relevant infectious disease threats to prevent and counter the health and readiness impacts that they pose for the military in general, and deployed personnel specifically,
