Disease outbreaks disrupt trade and travel, threaten economic stability, and cost lives. CAMRIS employs a multisectoral approach (working in health, veterinary, agricultural, environmental, and other sectors) to address global vulnerability to pandemics. We partner with governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society organizations to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats and improve health for all. Our staff develop information tools and systems for surveillance; build the capacity of laboratories to detect and diagnose disease threats; train bio-surveillance workforces; improve reporting systems; and conduct and promote research and policies so that national and local stakeholders are prepared to respond appropriately and rapidly to infectious disease outbreaks.
Antibiotics have long been used to treat and prevent infections. However, because of the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, pathogens are increasingly becoming drug-resistant, the rise of which is a growing threat to global health security. Antibiotic-resistant infections often require the use of alternative drugs that may be more expensive, more toxic, and less effective. As more pathogens become antibiotic-resistant, it can become more challenging to manage complications in patients undergoing treatments, such as chemotherapy, that weaken the immune system, or who undergo complex surgical procedures.
